Module Classes

The Module series is designed to give a step by step approach to learning Sanskrit, getting students to both translate Sanskrit texts and think in Sanskrit as early as possible.

Zoom class recordings will also be available. Basic homework will be given, depending on course level.

    • Pronunciation of the Sanskrit alphabet

    • Reading and Writing Devanāgarī

    • Beginning Sanskrit verse chanting 

    • Masculine and neuter nouns in short ‘a,' and feminine nouns in long ‘ā’ in all cases.

    • Basic verbs in the present tense.

    • Beginning vowel, visarga and consonant Sandhiḥ.

    • Translating and writing simple sentences.

    • Continue learning of Sanskrit verses.

    • Expanded knowledge of noun groups, including very simple nouns ending in consonants.

    • Expanded verb conjugations and tenses.

    • Continued vowel and consonant Sandhiḥ.

    • Continue learning of Sanskrit verses.

General Curriculum

  • Sanskrit alphabet and pronunciation

  • Yoga and Vedanta texts, including the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras

  • Sanskrit grammar targeted to immediate application of understanding texts

  • Pronunciation of āsana names, Ayurvedic terminology, Jyotisha terms, etc.

  • Sanskrit metrics and chanting

  • Sanskrit Stotras or hymns and other poetry

  • Pāṇinian linguistics

  • Conversational Sanskrit

  • Instructional verses for everyday life

Educational Objectives

  • Make and translate sentences with:

    • expanded verb tenses and verb forms

    • simple nouns ending in consonants

    • more nouns ending in vowels with a tie-in to the original consonant noun endings. Continue pattern recognition.

  • Learn further sandhiḥ (letter changes)

  • Gain a deeper understanding of Sanskrit as a tool for meditation

  • Progress with mantra chanting proficiency, including an understanding of metrics

  • Practice learning and chanting verses
